Start with calories, then measure the food
Weigh your pet or use the number from the last vet visit. The calculator turns that weight into a daily calorie target, then into cups or cans. Scoop sizes vary by brand and by kibble shape, so once you pick a food, check the bag for its calories per cup and adjust the amount. A kitchen scale is the quickest way to keep portions steady from one day to the next.
Age and activity change the number
Puppies and kittens burn far more energy than adults because they are still growing, which is why the feeding factor is so much higher. Senior pets usually need less. An active dog can burn through the same food that would push a couch dog over its target. Pick the closest activity level, then watch body condition over a few weeks and adjust.
Wet food, dry food, and mixing both
Canned food carries a lot of water, so it has far fewer calories per ounce than dry kibble. That is why this calculator shows cans for cats and cups for dogs. If you feed both, split the daily calories between them, for example half from kibble and half from cans. Keep treats under about ten percent of the daily total so they do not crowd out balanced food.

Questions about this calculator
How much should I feed my dog?
Start with a daily calorie target from your dog weight, age, and activity, then convert it to cups using the calories per cup printed on your food bag. A 40 lb adult dog at normal activity lands near 985 calories, about 2.7 cups of typical dry food. Check body condition after a few weeks and adjust.
How many calories does my dog need a day?
Resting energy is roughly 70 times the body weight in kilograms to the 0.75 power, then you multiply by a factor for life stage and activity. Most adult dogs land between 1.2 and 2 times their resting energy. Large dogs need more total calories, but fewer per pound than small dogs.
Do cats and dogs eat the same amount?
No. A cat weighs far less than most dogs, and cats also have a different metabolism. A 40 lb cat does not exist, but a 10 lb cat still needs only around 200 to 250 calories a day. Size every portion to the individual pet, not to another animal.
Is wet food or dry food better?
Both can be complete and balanced. Wet food adds water, which helps cats that do not drink much, but it costs more per calorie and needs refrigeration once opened. Dry food is convenient and shelf stable. What matters most is hitting the daily calorie target with a complete diet.
How do I measure a cup of dog food?
Use a standard 8 oz measuring cup, then check it against a kitchen scale once. Kibble size and shape change the weight in a cup, so scoops and mugs drift far from a true cup. Weighing the portion is the most accurate method if you want consistent meals.
Why does my puppy need so much more food?
Puppies and kittens are still growing, so they burn energy for growth on top of daily activity. That is why the feeding factor is much higher for young pets. Puppies often eat two to three times the adult portion for their weight, and the amount tapers as they mature.
Can I use this for a pet on a diet?
Use it only as a rough reference for weight loss plans. Reducing calories in a growing, pregnant, or sick pet can be unsafe, and sudden cuts can cause problems in cats. Ask your vet for a target before you change how much you feed.
